CM/ECF Claims Filer

To Become a Certified Claims Filer

By the time you complete the exercises below (Sections A - E), you will be able to 

  1. Ensure you have hardware, software  and PACER requirements. 
  2. Contact the Bankruptcy Court via e-mail or contact Lynn Myers at 406.497.1252 for a Proofs of Claim Training login and password.
  3. Review the Proof of Claim procedure in the Attorney Online Manual.
  4. Search Creditor, Add Creditor, and File a Proof of Claim
  5. Verify your Filing

The court will provide you with a training login and password to access the CM/ECF TRAINING database. A training case number will be issued as your case, which will be used for the exercises. You will complete the exercises by following the Proofs of Claim procedure in the "Attorney Online Manual."

Section A 
Hardware, Software and PACER requirements

  1. Ensure you have the hardware, software  and PACER requirements. 
    • If you have questions regarding hardware or software, contact Kevin Miner, Information Systems Manager.
Section B 
Training login and password
  1. Contact the Bankruptcy Court via e-mail or call Lynn Myers at 406.497.1252 with your name and telephone number requesting a training login and password to the CM/ECF training database to complete the Proofs of Claim certification exercise.
  2. Receive your training login and password for CM/ECF's training database and case number via e-mail from the District of Montana Bankruptcy Court.

Attorney Online Manual
  1. Review the File Claims procedure in the Attorney Online Manual.
Section D
Proof of Claim
  Instructions to complete a Proof of Claim and exhibit into PDF files.
Note: Case number and name are provided by the court. Use your name and mailing address as the new creditor name for the exercise.
  1. Download the Proof of Claim form

  2. Complete the proof of claim as you would normally. 
    Enter:
    • Debtor name and case number.
    • Creditor name and mailing address.
    • Amount of claim.
    • Type of proof of claim - secured  
    • Date and signature (/s/).
  3. Prepare an Exhibit for the secured Proof of Claim.
    • Example: A mock contract.
  4. Convert the Proof of Claim and exhibit into separate PDF files. Creating separate PDF files for the proof of claim and the exhibit, allows you to attach the exhibit as a supporting document when filing electronically. This will be explained further in the exercise. 
  Instructions to Login to CM/ECF's Proofs of Claim Training Database
Note: Training login, password and case number are provided by the court.
  1. Login to https://ecf-train.mtb.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl to access the Proofs of Claim CM/ECF Training database. 
  2. Enter your Proofs of Claim login and password.  
  3. Click on the Bankruptcy hyperlink.
  4. Click on File Claims hyperlink.
  5. Enter the case number. 
  Instruction to Search for creditor name, add a creditor and file a proof of claim
Note: Search your name and mailing address as the new creditor name for the exercise.
  1. Search for the new creditor name from the drop down list. 
  2. If the name does not appear, add the new creditor by clicking on the Add Creditor hyperlink and follow the steps below (a-e.) 
    1. Verify case number to ensure correct case again. 
    2. Enter new creditor name and mailing address.  
    3. Select the "Type" of creditor: Creditor or Administrative
    4. Select yes if on a Creditors Committee.
    5. Select "Last Entry" if no other creditors are to be added. 
  3. File  the Proof of Claim.
    1. Select the new creditor name from the drop down list.
    2. Enter Proof of Claim information such as Filed by, Amount of Claim, Type of Claim, Descriptions and Remarks. 
    3. Attach your Proof of Claim (PDF file.) 
    4. Select "yes" for additional document attachments. 
    5. Attach the exhibit (PDF file) in the browse field. 
    6. Select "Type" of document - "Exhibit"
    7. Type in "Description" of exhibit - Lease contract... 
    8. Print a copy of Notice of Electronic Filing for your records. This represents your conformed copy of filing the Proof of Claim.
Section E
Verify Filing
  1. Click on Claims Register in CM/ECF to review the report, you will need your PACER login and password. The claims register report will display the information which you entered and filed with the court. The numbered hyperlink is the proof of claim (PDF file) which was attached. 
  2.   Once done with the Proofs of Claim exercise E-Mail  or contact Lynn Myers at 406.497.1252 so we can review your filing for certification. 

Court's Certification Process: The court will quality assure the proof of claims you filed in the Training database. Once verified, if there are any questions, we will contact you via e-mail or phone. If everything looks good, we will then e-mail your live login and password to CM/ECF.
